Title: Anthropocene and Human Diseases
Dr. Partha Chakrabarti,
CSIR- Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata.
Evolution of Homo sapiens and their impact on natural environment, particularly in last two centuries caused havoc in terms of resource use and destruction of habitat for other species. Now the current geological age, viewed as the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment is now called ‘Anthropocene’. Here I will discuss how anthropos lead to causation of both infectious and non-infectious human diseases. These include infectious diseases like malaria, kala-azar, small pox, SARS, HIV and non-infectious diseases such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular events. Moreover I will discuss how newly emergent diseases are associated with unbridled human activity and initiate a dialogue on rethinking human history and pathology.
