Research Area:
Dr. Misra’s research focuses on advanced materials engineering, smart manufacturing, and sustainable technologies for high performance structural and functional applications. His work integrates surface engineering, additive manufacturing, alloy and composite design, and AI driven process optimization to enhance material performance and energy efficiency.
- Surface Engineering & Coatings Technology: Focused on developing high performance surface modification strategies to enhance durability, wear resistance, and multifunctional performance of engineering materials. These include laser surface modification, electroless deposition, solid lubrication systems, coating tribology, and advanced wear-resistant coatings for structural and energy applications.
- Additive Manufacturing & Advanced Material Processing: Emphasis on metal additive manufacturing, particularly Wire Directed Energy Deposition (Wire-DED) and Laser-DED systems, along with alloy design, composite development, and grain boundary engineering to tailor microstructure property relationships in next generation structural and functional materials.
- AI Enabled Smart Manufacturing: Integration of artificial intelligence and data driven methodologies for predictive modeling, digital twin development, and process optimization toward intelligent and sustainable manufacturing systems.
- Renewable Energy & Electric Vehicle Materials: Focused on the design and development of advanced materials systems for sustainable mobility and next generation clean energy technologies. Research encompasses lightweight structural alloys and metal matrix composites engineered for high strength-to-weight ratio, enhanced fatigue resistance, and improved thermal stability in electric vehicle (EV) platforms. Expertise includes the development of wear and corrosion-resistant coatings for battery systems, powertrain components to enhance durability and operational reliability. Work also involves materials selection and surface engineering solutions for high-temperature, hydrogen-rich, and chemically aggressive environments relevant to fuel cells, hydrogen storage systems, concentrated solar power, and advanced energy conversion technologies
- Mechanical & Tribological Characterization: Application of advanced microstructural, mechanical, and tribological evaluation techniques to establish robust microstructure-property-performance correlations. Expertise includes Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Raman Spectroscopy, High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), nano/micro-indentation and scratch testing, Universal Testing Machine (UTM)-based mechanical characterization, and reciprocating as well as ball-on-disk wear analysis.
