Dr Bibek Bandyopadhyay is the former Director of the Solar Energy Centre and former Adviser of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. He started his work in solar energy at IIT Delhi, and further worked with Government of India at DST (Department of Science and Technology) and MNRE for more than three decades. From early 1980s, Dr Bandyopadhyay was involved in development of solar energy in the country and was associated in the formulation and implementation of the National Solar Mission. He also coordinated the activities of hydrogen and fuel cells in the ministry. In addition to his role as a Senior Adviser at MNRE, Dr Bandyopadhyay served as the Director of Solar Energy Centre from 2005 till his superannuation in August 2013. He contributed immensely towards developing the Centre as a vibrant organisation of international repute. The Centre has since been converted as the National institute of Solar Energy (NISE).

After superannuation from Government service in 2013, he is engaged in advisory services in the policy, management and technical space of clean energy technologies and remains associated with teaching & research. He served as a Visiting Professor of IIEST Shibpur and as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of NIT Arunachal Pradesh for several years. He is currently engaged with Ernst & Young LLP and International Institute for Energy Conservation as a Senior Adviser and was earlier associated with Nexant Inc.

Dr Bandyopadhyay has a few books and research papers in his credit, and has been assisting international journal ‘Solar Energy’ for many years as an Associate Editor. He also served on the editorial boards of the international journal ‘Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews’ and the ‘Indian Journal of Engineering and Materials Science’. He was one of the Guest Editors of the international journal Solar Energy Materials & Solar Cells for its Special issue on PVSEC 18.  He remains associated with several national and international organizations and platforms related to emerging energy technologies.

Dr Bandyopadhyay, a former student of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandir Belurmath, holds a Master’s degree in Physics from Visva Bharati Santiniketan and a Doctoral degree from University of Delhi. He completed a course in management from the Istituto Per La Ricostruzione Industriale (IRI) Rome. He is a fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering.
